Privacy policy

The short version

There are no accounts and we don't ask who you are. Your searches are processed and then forgotten. Game progress and statistics stay in your own browser. If you allow it, a copy is also kept online under a random ID so it can be restored.

What we store on your device

Games use your browser's local storage (keys starting with wf:) to keep today's puzzle, your streaks and statistics, and preferences such as colour-blind mode. We also remember your cookie choice in local storage and in a small wf_consent cookie. This is essential storage: it stays on your device unless you turn on online progress sync. Clearing site data in your browser removes it. The full list is on our cookie settings page.

Anonymous ID and online progress sync

If you allow Functional cookies, we set a wf_uid cookie holding a random ID. Your game stats and today's boards are then also saved on our server under that ID, so your progress can be restored online. That ID is all we store with your games. We don't keep your IP address, name, email address or anything else that says who you are. You can delete your synced data at any time from My stats, and you can turn sync off in cookie settings. If you never allow Functional cookies, nothing about your games leaves your device.

Game ratings

After a game you can rate it from one to five stars and add a short comment. Sending a rating creates a random rater ID in your browser's local storage (wf:rid), and that ID, the game, your stars and your comment are stored on our server so you can change your rating later. We don't store your IP address, name or anything else that says who you are with it. Ratings are checked before they appear, and approved ones may be shown on the game page without any name, so please keep personal details out of comments. What our servers see

As with any website, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) receives your IP address, browser type and the pages you request in order to serve them, and keeps standard server logs for a short period for security and performance. Word searches are sent to our server to compute results and are not stored or linked to you.

Advertising

We may show ads to keep the site free. Advertising partners may set cookies or use similar technologies to show relevant ads and measure them, in line with their own privacy policies. No ad cookies are set unless you allow Ads, and you can change your choice at any time in cookie settings (also linked at the bottom of every page).

Analytics

We don't run analytics yet. If we add it, it will only count visits after you allow Analytics in cookie settings, and it won't build cross-site tracking profiles.

Children

The site is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal data. We hold nothing tied to your name. The practical steps are clearing your browser's site data and, if you turned on sync, deleting your synced progress from My stats. Questions: hello@thewordfinder.io.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
