Letter Boxed solver

This Letter Boxed solver finds the shortest solutions to the NYT Letter Boxed puzzle. Type the three letters on each side of the square, and it lists chains of two words, then three, that use all 12 letters, with each word starting on the last letter of the word before.

How to use the Letter Boxed solver

  1. Type the three letters on each side into its box: top, right, bottom and left. The order within a side doesn't matter.
  2. Press Solve.
  3. Solutions come first: the fewest words at the top, and chains of common words ahead of ones that need a rare word.
  4. Below the solutions is every word the box allows, if you'd rather work out your own path.

The rules in short

Each word needs at least three letters, and two letters in a row can't come from the same side of the box. That means double letters like LL never work. Every new word starts with the last letter of the one before, and you win once all 12 letters have been used. The game suggests a target number of words each day, but two is often enough.

Our word list and the NYT's

The New York Times keeps its own word list for Letter Boxed, and ours is based on ENABLE, a public one. Now and then a solution here uses a word the game won't take. When that happens, try the next solution down; most boxes have plenty.

Questions people ask

How does it find two-word answers?

It first lists every word the box allows. Then, for each word, it checks the words that start with that word's last letter and keeps the pairs that use all 12 letters between them. If it finds fewer than 20 pairs, it looks for three-word chains as well.

Why does the game reject a word from the list?

The NYT uses its own dictionary for Letter Boxed. Ours is based on ENABLE, a public word list, and a few words are on one list but not the other. Pick another solution; there are usually several.

Can I use a letter twice?

Yes. Letters can be reused as often as you like, as long as two letters next to each other in a word sit on different sides of the box.

Is there always a two-word solution?

Usually, but not always. When there isn't one in our word list, the solver shows three-word chains instead.
